Despite the cool summer temps that lingered well into summer, things heated up on June 19th as BREAD! KC joined forces with Cultivate KC and PLUG Projects at City Ice Arts for the Urban Grown event, Local Earth.  At the event, nearly 150 artists, farmers, and community members of all ages came together to learn more about interesting and engaging urban agricultural projects that are taking place all over the city.  By the time the sun had set and the last light in the gallery had been switched off, Jana Loflin was awarded a $1,165 grant, generated by the evening’s ticket sales, to fund her urban garden project, Sprout: A Trophy Garden.  Other Bread Chasers that evening included Tori Gatlin  from Santa Fe Community Senior Garden and Kendall Kerr at Kansas City Academy.

For BREAD! KC, this event marked over $14,200 in micro-grants that the organization has awarded.  Thanks for the continued support, KC!

We were grateful to receive donations from a number of farms that were featured on the Urban Grown Tour, including Gibbs Road Community Farm, Guerilla Garden,  Lucky Star Farms, and Wells Family Farm.  Craig Howard from Howard’s Organic Fare & Vegetable Patch threw together an arugula salad, which paired nicely with the short ribs that were slow-smoked by Grill Talk, a chilled, herbed meatloaf made of Paradise Locker ground beef, egg salad, Farm to Market bread, and lemon tea cookies by morsel.  Hopped toddy was generously provided by our friends at Oddly Correct, and Hawthorne & Julep shook things up with mint juleps and local sour cocktails.

Thanks for another smashingly successful event, Kansas City!  Be sure to check out Tyler Fox’s write-up on the evening, featured on the Chow Town blog: http://www.kansascity.com/2013/06/21/4305613/local-organizations-join-to-break.html
