August at the Reading Reptile
Sunday, August 19, the Bread Crew teamed up with our friends the Cowdin’s of the Reading Reptile in Brookside to hold a “kids” themed pie and ice cream social! Fitting for the environment of a children’s bookstore, all presenters pitched proposals geared toward serving the adolescent community while the audience enjoyed dessert for dinner.
Bread! KC raised $620 in total, which went to Adam Finkelston, a fine arts teacher at Shawnee Mission East, who proposed an extracurricular float trip with his students called Art & Science On the River. This trip, which Adam has conducted once before & wants to make annual, is an opportunity for students to learn about river ecology and then produce a self directed art project based upon their trip. Adam stated that he was currently receiving no funding for these trips (from his school or otherwise), so we expect the Bread Grant to make a considerable impact!
Other presenters included Theodore Bunch with a few of his students from the Gillis Center, and Yann Aguierre. Theo was asking for money to help further his project, Gillis Growth Grove of the Gillis Center, a community center aimed at helping disadvantaged youth. Gillis Growth Grove’s goal is to achieve this by educating youngsters on food, cooking, and gardening. Yann proposed the purchase of video editing software that would allow him to use multiple actors to play the same role. The actors in his films were to be children in his hopes that everyone being able to play the role would be an egalitarian way of casting, fulfilling the dreams & desires of all to be on the silver screen.
In addition to kids themed presentations, Bread! KC was aided with the help of Annie Watson and Brianne Teevan-Bongiovanni of Bambini Creativi to craft our ice cream flavor selections! Bambini Creativi is a Reggio Emilia approach preschool where very young students decide what they want to learn and then are aided by their teachers in following through with that curiosity.
The full menu featured coconut and honey ice cream, strawberry with chocolate chunk ice cream, peach & apple hand pies, a variety of cupcakes, vegetarian shepherd’s pie, and bierock’s! Cupcakes and pies were made by Karen of Le Petite Rouge (downloadable PDF menu on the Reading Reptile’s homepage, left hand column, two from the bottom)!
After this event, Bread! KC’s Grant total is now over $8200!! That’s a lot of love being spread!
Best Wishes, xoxoxo,
