For quite some time, the BREAD! Crew had wanted to work with Craig Howard, sous chef at Blue Bird Bistro and owner/operator of Howard’s Organic Fare & Vegetable Patch. For our May BREAD! KC event, we had the honor and privilege of working with Howard as he hosted us at his market place just a few days before its grand opening.
In honor of Memorial Day, Howard wanted to focus on grilling and the use of summery fruits and veggies. The final result was a vegetarian-friendly sandwich, which consisted of a mixture of portabella mushrooms, arugula, roasted red peppers, pickled asparagus and basil mayo, served on a Farm to Market brioche bun. For dessert: “berry soup with a cherry scoop”.
The Bread Chasers this month were Nick Naughton of La Cucaracha Press, who pitched ideas for a newly-formed print collective, and ceramicist Calder Kamin, whose project Impact Proof helps prevent birds from flying into windows and injuring themselves through the use of adhesive decals. Though it was a close vote, the $270 BREAD! grant was ultimately awarded to Kamin, and will go directly towards printing new decals that she plans to install at various locations throughout the Kansas City area before the migration season begins.
A very special thanks to Craig Howard, Howard’s Organic Fare & Vegetable Patch, Cory Imig, City Arts Project, Farm To Market Bread Co., Goode Farms, Door to Door Organics, all the presenters, our generous supporters, and all our family and friends.
